How to Overcome Surf Fear

  1. Man….I’m so glad you tackled this topic, especially in the context of a first-timers trip. You know the struggle was real for me! I had seen so many videos of advance surfers being playful in “perfect” Indo surf that it was a rude awakening to realize just how much skill even 3 foot performance waves require. Anything over that became a physical and mental challenge for me, which I wasn’t expecting. I did get intimidated and aggravated a few times. One time in particular at Hollow Trees I backed out of a wave in front of the whole crew that I’m sure could have pitted me. But, by the end of the trip, thanks to Chris and Clay and Twiggy, I caught some waves I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. Thanks Chris. I so appreciate you do what you do! 2. When I see on Surfline that it’s 4-5 on the Northside of the Huntington Beach Pier I think to myself “no way, and look for spots with smaller surf. However, after reading this article the next time it’s that big I’ll paddle out and just sit on the shoulders, study, learn, breath and feel. Then once I’ve settled in I’ll give it go….

    1. it’s all about building familiarity and awareness. push your boundaries safely and rationally, and yes, getting out amongst the bigger surf will be a great way for you to experience it. enjoy the rush!

  3. This is so helpful – unravelling fear with this checklist. By the way, this can easily be translated to ppl learning and progressing to ski/snowboard ! Thanks!

    1. Thank you Dario, I’m glad to hear it’s been helpful. the fear response comes up in many sports, even life situations. What we face in surfing is often a reflection of life. deep thoughts. hahah

  4. Excellent writing !
Really liked the part of “Surfing Is A True Reflection Of Our Lives”.
I remember myself just sitting in the channel for 2-3 hours on a big day and just feeling the vibes.

    1. Thank you very much Adi, I’m stoked you appreciate it, and stoked that there are people out there that still read! Yep, I’ve done the same at times on bigger days, just sit, watch, feel it, take it all in, feel the energy, and experience it!
